Colombo Port operations to be fully computerised by 2003
[June 21, 2001]

The Port of Colombo, graded the twenty first port in the world and the hub port of South Asia, is now heading for full computerisation by year 2003. Once completed, the facilities are expected to match those available in other transhipment ports in the world.

Chairman of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), Admiral Mohan Samarasekara said that this project had been launched to introduce computerised programmes for loading and discharging of ships. Currently, the yard and vessel planning are computerised.

“What we are trying to get on to is a fully computerised environment with Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) facility operations as per UN EDIFACT standards”, SLPA Chairman said. His comments came during an exclusive interview with the PRIU.

The Japan Bank for International Co-operation [JBIC] and the SLPA are funding the project.

He said that the Port of Colombo has established a name for itself as a regional transhipment hub by being very strategically located at the centre of the Indian Ocean.
