Prestigious American Award for Sri Lankan Author
[June 21, 2001]

Sri Lankan author Anne Ranasinghe has won two awards at the "Salute the Arts Poetry Competition" at the Triton College School of Arts and Sciences in Illinois, U.S.A. The awards were made for her contributions We Turn Towards Each other and A Kind of Love Poem. Ms. Ranasinghe has won eight awards from the Triton College alone since 1976 apart from many awards in Sri Lanka.

Speaking of her award Ms. Ranasinghe said, “These are my small American successes, it really pleases me very much that I can still, in spite of rapidly advancing age.”

Her work has appeared in a number of anthologies and journals. Her poems and radio plays have been published and broadcast in several countries and have been translated into ten languages. Lori Leitman-Rosenblum, a composer and professor of music at the University of Washington, has set a number of her poems to music.

"Salute the Arts Poetry Competition" was instituted in 1973 as the "All Nations Poetry Contest" to encourage poets from all over the world to express themselves to share their personal triumphs and tragedies that are part of the common human experience.
