Opposition no-confidence: President confident of Government’s stability
[June 23, 2001]

President Kumaratunga expressed confidence that the Government had sufficient power today, as it had in 1994. She said that alternative means have already been found to strengthen the power of the Government.

Her comments during a visit to her hometown of Attanagalla, came in the wake of the opposition motion of no-confidence against the Government submitted to Parliament Friday evening.

Earlier, at a specially convened Press Conference at which representatives of the Tamil parties supporting the motion of no-confidence were present. UNP spokesman Karunasena Kodituwakku said, “We have no confidence in the Government since it is demonstrably clear that it cannot solve the pressing problems of the country and its people,”

However, President Kumaratunga said, “The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has shared power with coalitions, to rule this country in the past. It ruled this country in harmony with coalition partners from 1994, until a few members of the SLMC led by its leader crossed over to the opposition. The Government has sufficient power today, as it had in 1994.”

Ninety-seven Parliamentarians belonging to the main opposition party, the United National Party (UNP) and the minority Tamil parties, the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF), Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation (TELO) and All Ceylon Tamil Congress (ACTC) have signed the motion.

The opposition move came hours before Ranil Wickremasinghe, Leader of the Opposition and of the UNP, met with President Chandrika Kumaratunga for a crucial round of discussions.

Reacting to the no-confidence motion, Leader of the House Minister Richard Pathirana said that an early date would be fixed for a debate.
