Ten fast practice pitches will come up at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo by the end of this year. Explaining his plans for the development of cricket in Sri Lanka, Minister of Sports, Lakshman Kiriella, said, "My recent visit to South Africa made me realise that Sri Lankan cricketers needed to practice on fast pitches as they found it difficult to cope with the South African pace attacks on those fast pitches." The next World Cup will be held in South Africa in 2003. A hostel, which could house 100 cricketers, is another key project that will be implemented at a cost of 10 million rupees for cricketers in rural Sri Lanka. He also plans to improve the playing fields in the towns of Wattala, Moratuwa, Panadura, Ambalangoda, Kalutara and Hambantota to international standards. "This will definitely be a bonus for the players who come from these areas," the Minister said. The Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka is also to get a new headquarters in close proximity to the R. Premadasa Stadium.
