The Government has decided to defer the ban on the importation of Genetically Modified Foods (GMF) till September 1, 2001. “The decision to postpone the ban was reached in order to comply with WTO as 60 days' notice should be given to the WTO to implement the new regulation,” Dr. S. Nagiah, the Chief Food and Drugs Inspector of the Health Ministry said. The Government had earlier issued a gazette notification prohibiting the import of all Genetically Modified Foods including soya bean, soya products, corn/maize and their products, fresh tomatoes and bakers yeast to Sri Lanka with effect from May 1.
