“Drug trafficking has become one of the most deadly scourges among the illegal activities of the world” - CBK
[June 26, 2001]

The Government of Sri Lanka is fully committed to the eradication of narcotics and solicits the cooperation of all to combat the drug menace, said President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga in a message to mark the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking observed today.

To mark this special day, a massive mobile anti-drug awareness programme complete with educational floats will wend its way from the southern city of Galle to Colombo today.  This programme has been organised by the Navajeevana Amadyapa Handa Sevaya a an anti-narcotic NGO located at Rumassala near Galle.

A motorcade will make stops at major cities where they will perform street dramas and a special vehicle will distribute information and guidance to those voluntarily willing to free themselves from drug abuse.  The street dramas will highlight the consequences of narcotics and drug abuse.

President’s Message

Drug trafficking has become one of the most deadly scourges among the illegal activities of the world. I need not reiterate that this evil has become a profound influence on our society today. It is no secret that international movements on terrorism also support the promotion of drugs. Not only have I taken cognisance of these realities, I have also appraised other world leaders on this menace.  It is mandatory that we have to use very prudent methods to combat this scourge due to the mysterious nature of this trade.

However, I wish to commend the various state institutions such as the National Dangerous Drug Control Board, the Police Department, the Customs, the Excise Department and others for the role that they are playing in the combat of this menace.

However, the results in the combat of this menace would be more effective if every citizen cooperates with these institutions, as the state institutions cannot tackle the menace in isolation.
