The Colombo Plan celebrates 50 years
[June 28, 2001]

The Colombo Plan, founded in 1951 on the initiative of seven countries celebrates its golden Jubilee on July 2.

The organisation came into being after the Commonwealth Foreign Ministers meeting held in Colombo in January 1950 where ministers concentrated their attention on the needs of the newly independent countries of South East Asia. The founding countries were the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

"The Golden Jubilee celebrations in Sri Lanka will be marked with a Run Against Drug Abuse – a major concern in countries of the region. It will be held in Colombo. Other activities include the issue of a stamp, an art competition, the issue of a commemorative coin and the release of a souvenir with messages from Heads of Governments of member counties," said Dr. U. Sarathchandran, Secretary General of the Colombo Plan.

Sri Lankan President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga will inaugurate the 38th Consultative Committee Meeting (CCM) in Colombo.
