Pope urges negotiated settlement to conflict in Sri Lanka
[July 2, 2001]

Pope John Paul II yesterday reiterated that action should be taken to commence negotiations to end the ethnic problem in the country.

He called on the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE to immediately start peace talks.

“A negotiated solution is the only way to confront the serious issues which are at the root of the conflict,” the pontiff said in an address to pilgrims at St. Peter’s Square.

In a special message directed to Sri Lanka’s Catholics celebrating the festival Our Lady of Madhu, the Pope urged the faithful to pray for a resolution to the conflict between the government and the LTTE.
