Colombo’s Archbishop, Nicholas Marcus Fernando called upon all political party leaders to turn the current political turmoil to an opportunity to come together to from a national government and save the country from total lawlessness and moral depravity. “Whatever the party manoeuvres itself into power is not going to last long. Even fresh elections may not result in any party getting a majority large enough to rule the country in a stable manner,” the Archbishop said in a statement issued yesterday. The Archbishop said that if a national government was formed it could be the start of non-confrontational and more co-operative politics for the greater good of the country. “A new political culture has been spoken of in recent months. If that is converted into reality, then this country has a chance of recovering from its lawlessness and moral depravity; and the hope of creating a dharmista society devoid of fear, violence and corruption could be made real again.” “It is our sincere hope that all parties will give this possibility of forming a national government, a try at least this time and bring about peace and prosperity.” The Archbishop’s statement came a day after Pope John Paul II, the head of the Roman Catholic Church called on the government and the LTTE to begin negotiations towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict in Sri Lanka.
