The Sampath Bank has taken a policy decision to offer employment to disabled persons. When offering employment opportunities, the bank will give priority to deaf and dumb persons who are generally believed to possess special skills. Established in 1987, Sampath is the first in Sri Lanka to employ disabled employees in the banking industry. The bank has already recruited six persons from the Deaf and Dumb School at Ratmalana. “Due to limitations in their communicating capability, they had to be assigned to specific areas in the bank and the Central Cash Division was identified a suitable area for them to work,” a spokesman for the Bank said. He added that these recruits enjoy all facilities and benefits such as housing loans, vehicle loans, medical facilities and leave entitlements as the other staff. In the meantime, Sampath Bank has launched an Internet payment gateway, which allows customers to do Internet shopping and pay in local currency. A bank official said that Sampath was the first ever Sri Lankan bank to enter the world of e-commerce in Sri Lanka. Initially the gateway will have selected items for shopping. The first retailer to come in was Singer Sri Lanka. "The bank plans to cover the total range of banks and merchants as the service improves," said a spokesman for the Sampath Bank. "For the consumer, Internet shopping is a convenient way of shopping," he added.
