The US has stepped up its military cooperation with Sri Lanka since then. Admiral Dennis Blair, Commander in Chief of the United States Pacific Command arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday on a two-day goodwill visit at the invitation of the Chief of Defence Staff, General Rohan Daluwatte. The Admiral said yesterday that he appreciated the challenges faced by the Sri Lankan Security Forces in dealing with the Tiger terrorists. He made these observations after talks with local military leaders and visiting military installations here. He also met the President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar. Admiral Blair who visited Bangladesh earlier will leave for the Maldives today. He will also travel to the Philippines and Japan before returning to his base in Hawaii.
