UNP opposes prorogation of Parliament
[July 12, 2001]

Leader of the Opposition Ranil Wickremasinghe said yesterday that President Kumaratunga’s unilateral decision to prorogue parliament without consulting the Cabinet of Ministers and other constituent parties of the ruling People’s Alliance, signified a vicious dictatorial trait.

“The move came at a time when a no-confidence motion had been tabled in parliament and showed nothing but the President’s dictatorial trait,” the Opposition Leader said in a statement issued yesterday.

“Instead of calling for the resignation of her minority government, the President had resorted to prorogation to cling onto power,” the Opposition Leader said, pointing out that 115 opposition MPs had handed in a petition to the Speaker, asking that the debate on the no-confidence motion be taken up on July 18 and a vote on July 20.

Wickremasinghe who is the leader of the main opposition group in Parliament, the United National Party (UNP), called on all political parties, professional and civic groups and the general public to protest against the prorogation of Parliament.

Earlier yesterday, the entire Cabinet of Ministers and the Government Parliamentary Group were unanimous in their support for President Chandrika Kumaratunga’s decision.
