Sri Lanka set for census
[July 17, 2001]

Offices throughout the country closed early as the country prepared for its first census in twenty years later today.

The final phase of Sri Lanka’s 13th Population & Housing Census is scheduled for today. The enumerators will visit residences between 6.00 p.m. and 12.00 midnight.

The government has declared a half-day holiday for the state and private sector employees today and all schools are closed. Census Chief, A.G.W. Nanayakkara has urged people to remain indoors in the evening, so they can be counted.

Around 100,000 enumerators will do a physical head-count.
