A high- powered committee was appointed by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to monitor all on-going development projects. She strongly urged that government offices and development activities should function and must continue unabated despite the turbulent conditions in the political sphere. The President directed Senior Government Officials to expedite these high-powered projects undertaken by various Government agencies in co-ordination with the Ministers and the Secretaries of the respective Ministries. The meeting on Monday was held at the at President’s House, in Colombo. “Projects earmarked and initiated for the well being of the public should continue,” said the President. The President directed the Committee to study the schemes implemented by the Western Provincial Council with regard to road development and to introduce them to all other relevant agencies.
