Two persons died when police fired on protesters who defied a Police ban in Colombo. Several thousand anti-government protesters clashed with Police in many parts of the city. The protests were led by the opposition United National Party (UNP) who have questioned the need for a Referendum and called for Parliament to be reconvened. President Kumaratunga prorogued Parliament July 10 using constitutional powers vested in her as Executive President. She called for a Referendum on August 21 as a matter of national importance to establish a new constitution. The Police Chief Lucky Kodituwakku yesterday refused permission for the UNP led protest, citing provisions in the Referendum Act which prohibit any procession other than for religious or social purposes, as it may affect the result of the Referendum. Over fifty persons are believed to have received minor injuries in today’s incidents. A senior official at the National Hospital in Colombo said that two more persons were being treated for serious injuries.
