President Chandrika Kumaratunga has approved the release of Rs. 5 million from the President's Fund to purchase advanced security equipment for the Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth Relic) in Kandy. The LTTE attacked the Temple in January 1998. Three members of the LTTE drove a truck laden with explosives through roadblocks and detonated it in front of the temple. Ten civilians were killed in the attack and 25 were injured drawing worldwide condemnation. "The deliberate killings of civilians by armed opposition groups are human rights abuses which cannot be tolerated under any circumstances," Amnesty International said condemning the attack. The Sri Dalada Maligawa, in which the Tooth Relic of the Lord Buddha is enshrined, is possibly the most venerated Buddhist shrine in the world. A UNESCO designated World Heritage Site, the temple in Sri Lanka’s hill capital, Kandy, is visited by millions of pilgrims both Buddhists and non-Buddhists from all over the world.
