Four Air Force personnel killed in the attack
[July 24, 2001 - 07:07 GMT] 

Four Air Force personnel were killed when LTTE rebels attacked the Air Force Base and International Airport at Katunayake, 35km north of Colombo.

According to hospital sources 19 injured persons have been admitted to the Teaching Hospital in Colombo, the Negombo Base Hospital and the General Hospital in Ragama.

Passengers and staff at the Airport were evacuated to Hotels soon after the attack began.

A Russian national employed by SriLankan Airlines is receiving treatment at the General Hospital in Colombo for injuries sustained during the attack. Hospital sources claimed that his injuries were not serious.

Nine rebels are believed to have died in the attack. Security forces who cordoned off the area surrounding the Air Base and International Airport are continuing to search for rebels who may be in hiding.

The attack that began before dawn today completely destroyed two aircraft of the Srilankan Airlines’ Airbus fleet. Three others have been damaged. Eight military aircraft have also been destroyed.
