Colombo Airport to resume normal operations today

The Bandaranaike International Airport will resume normal operations today.

The Airport was closed down yesterday due to a pre-dawn attack by Tamil tiger rebels.

Several incoming flights were diverted to other airports following the closure. A spokesman for the national carrier Srilankan Airlines, said that the first inbound flight after the re-opening of the airport was expected around 11.30 A.M. Wednesday.

In a statement issued today, Srilankan Airlines said that they had planned a tentative flight schedule for today which would be issued later in the day.

Director General of Civil Aviation, Lal Liyanarachchi assured that there was no damage to the Control Tower or to the equipment there. He also said that there was no damage to the tarmac.

"Operations can resume as soon as security clearances are given," he said.
