Srilankan Airlines resumes services
[July 25, 2001 - 11:55 GMT]

The first Srilankan Airlines inbound flight after yesterday’s attack on Colombo’s International Airport arrived from Madras today at 4.45 P.M.

UL 697 from Sydney was diverted to Madras following the rebel attack at the Bandaranaike International Airport early last morning.

The airline this afternoon published its revised flight schedules.

Srilankan Airlines Chief Executive Officer Peter Hill issued a statement yesterday on the resumption of the airline’s flights. British born Hill said that it was essential to have an absolute guarantee from the authorities that the area is under control before allowing passengers and staff any access to the airport.

“The safety of our customers and staff is absolutely paramount,” he said. “It is essential that we have an absolute guarantee from the authorities that the area is under total control before allowing passengers and staff any access to the airport,” he added.

“All of our customers on holiday in Sri Lanka are safe and well and arrangements to repatriate them will be made soon as possible,” he said.
