[July 26, 2001 - 10:30 GMT]

Britain, and Russia have condemned the attack on the Katunayake Air Force base and the International Air Port by the LTTE.

“We strongly condemn this latest attack by the LTTE and urge them to renounce terrorism," British Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw said, referring to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

The LTTE have been fighting with Sri Lankan government forces over 18 years to establish a separate state in the north and east of the country.

Straw called on the Sri Lankan government and the rebels to cease hostilities, and said Britain was ready to help in the peace process.

“We strongly condemn this latest attack by the LTTE and urge them to renounce terrorism," British Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw said, referring to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. "We are extremely concerned about the internal conflict in Sri Lanka and urge the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE to cease hostilities and work towards a long-term solution to the conflict through peaceful negotiation," he said.

“The Tamil Tigers' new attack shows that terrorists are a serious threat in Sri Lanka,” the foreign ministry of Russia said in a statement issued on Tuesday.

The Russian Foreign Ministry also stated that Tamil Tigers have destabilised the whole Southern Asia region by their destructive activities.

The attack demonstrates the LTTE’s ability and willingness to select targets without regard for the safety of civilians, including tourists," the US State Department said, warning US citizens against non-essential travel to Sri Lanka.
