Legal aid for Internally displaced civilians
[July 30, 2001 - 13:00 GMT]

Civilians affected by the ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka are to receive legal aid under a special scheme.

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka through its Legal Aid Commission has taken the initiative, in a bid to stop the escalating number of crimes influenced by the conflict, especially sexual harassment in the war-zone.

The project would initially focus on conducting mobile assistance campaigns for the thousands of those displaced and in welfare camps.

A telephone hotline is to be provided to facilitate inquiries.

“This move would also offer assistance to those who need legal help to get their military passes and other identification documents in order,” President of the Legal Aid Commission, S.S. Wijeratne, said.
