Twenty-three year old Mangalika Priyanthi of Gampola was the first patient to undergo heart surgery at the Kandy General Hospital. A hospital official confirmed that the patient would be able to go home within two days. A team of surgeons led by Karapitiya General Hospital’s Cardio Thoracic Surgeon Dr. Namal Gamage performed the operation Thursday. The operation was conducted in one of the theatres of the Cardio Thoracic Unit of the Hospital’s newly opened building. Meanwhile, the Health Ministry expects to station a permanent Cardio-Thoracic surgeon from India to continue heart surgery at the Kandy Hospital.
