“Sincerely support the new constitution” - President urges UNP
[July 30, 2001 - 13:30 GMT]

President Kumaratunga once again urged the Opposition to support the new constitution, which would abolish the Executive Presidency. She was speaking at a Referendum campaign rally held at Kurunegela, in North Western Sri Lanka, Sunday.

Kumaratunga earlier this month prorogued Parliament and called for a Referendum on the need for a new constitution.

“The August 21 referendum is not a political battle for power but a national issue for the betterment of the country’s future. This is the only way by which we could successfully end the war and offer a political solution to the grievances of minority communities,” said the President.

She pointed out that the LTTE’s opposition to the Constitution was made clear through three major attacks. The attack on Sri Dalada Maligawa soon after the draft Constitution was presented; a nearly fatal attack on the President herself and the recent attack at Katunayake on the threshold of a constitutional change. The LTTE she said, were aware that the new Constitution would solve the ethnic problem resulting in the minority tamil community rejecting them completely.

In her address to the nation on Thursday, she highlighted the new Constitution’s guarantee for “more political and economic power” to all the peoples of our country.

The President expressed her hope in a “sincere” and an “honest” support from the UNP and all other democratic political parties for the success of the ‘change’.

“I am prepared to go ahead with the Constitutional changes even if that puts my life at risk.” she added.
