President briefs diplomats

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga briefed diplomats and heads of Foreign Missions in Sri Lanka on the current political situation. Thirty-six diplomats attended the meeting held Monday at President’s House.

President Kumaratunga told the diplomatic community that the Government had sought the professional opinion of constitutional experts in the United States, United Kingdom and France on the introduction of the new Constitution and the possibilities of enacting it in a legally and morally acceptable manner.

The delegates also discussed with the President, the current political situation in the country.

The President expressed her personal gratitude and that of the government to all governments, which condemned the LTTE attack on the country’s only civilian airport - the Bandaranaike International Airport [BIA]. She also said that the countries, which proscribed the LTTE in their soil, were ‘absolutely right in doing so’.

Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar and Deputy Minister Mr. Harendra Corea were also present at the occasion.
