Magsaysay Award to Sri Lankan Classical Music Maestro

Veteran musician and Singer, Pundit Dr. W. D. Amaradeva has been awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award – Asia’s Nobel Prize, for excellence in Journalism, Literature and Creative Communications Arts. 

The Magsaysay Foundation in Philippines yesterday announcing the Award said that the music maestro was wedded to the poetry of his native Sinhalese culture; to Buddhist chants, North Indian ragas and Christian hymns.  Pundit Amaradeva completed his music studies at the Bathkande Sangeeth Vidyapeeth, Lucknow, India, through public funds and qualified as the best musician at the final examination.

Earlier, several Sri Lankan artistes have won the Magsaysay Award; Artist L.T.P. Manjusri, Dr. A. T. Ariyaratne, Prof. Ediriweera Sarathchandra, Father Marceline Jayakody, Mary Rutnam and Tarzie Vittachi.
