President meets the Maha Sangha
[August 1, 2001 - 11:20 GMT]

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga briefed Sri Lanka’s Maha Sangha (Buddhist Chief Priests) Tuesday, on the need for a new constitution and the process initiated by calling a Referendum.

The President pointed out to the prelates that she was going to the people in the most democratic manner to get their mandate through the referendum in sharp contrast to former President J R Jayawardene.  “But, the UNP is still not offering its cooperation to resolve this burning national issue,” she further said.

The President stressed that; “The war is funded by expatriate Tamils who are doing it against their conscience.  What they want is a lasting, durable peace and a firm assurance that they can live in this country safely.”  This was the main reason why she wished to implement a new constitution.

“I am more than willing to surrender the Executive Presidency for the sake of resolving the country’s burning problems,” Kumaratunga emphasised.
