Retirement benefits for Moratuwa carpenters
[August 2, 2001 - 11:20 GMT]

A pension scheme was introduced for the carpenters of Moratuwa and surrounding areas, last Saturday, at the Moratuwa Buddhist Centre.

The town situated a few kilometres south of Colombo has an estimated 13,000 carpenters.

Carpenters in the age group of 18-59 are eligible to contribute to this pension scheme.  The premiums would vary in accordance with their ages and the instalments can be paid monthly or quarterly.  The dues can be claimed once a carpenter reaches the age of 60 years.

The Social Insurance Board, IDB, Prof. G L Peiris Foundation and the Carpentry Association of Moratuwa are assisting in the operation of this pension scheme.  Seventy-one carpenters were awarded pensions initially.
