The Presidential Scholarship Programme, initiated by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, will be awarding 175 long-term and short-term scholarships this year. This program is now being implemented for the second time. It will award scholarships to university lecturers, artistes, professionals, government servants and their children. Fifty of these scholarships will be post-graduate scholarships abroad for children of government servants in various fields such as engineering, management, information technology, economics, commerce, law and taxation. Another 85 are local and foreign scholarships awarded to government servants. 20 short-term scholarships are assigned for employees of specialised services in the government sector. Applications for these scholarships are now being accepted. Complete details relating to the fields of scholarships will appear in the Silumina, Observer and Thinakaran newspapers of August 5, 2001.
