Purahanda Kaluwara’ comes out of the darkness

A three judge Bench of the Supreme Court ordered the National Film Corporation to begin screening the Purahanda Kaluwara, (Death on a full moon day) by September 15 this year.

The Film Corporation made the order under section 6 of the National Film Corporation of Sri Lanka Act of 1971 that the exhibition of the film had been deferred July last year since the country has been placed on a war footing.

The film, directed by Prasanna Vithanage won a number of international awards including the Grand Prix Award depicts thousands of fathers in the country who had given their sons to the war and were awaiting their return. It is the story of Wannihami (Joe Abeywickrama) who is not ready to accept the death of his son who had joined the army.

Joe Abeywickrema, won the best actor's award 
at the Singapore Film Festival in 1999.

'Purahanda Kaluwara' was a co-production with NHK of Japan.
