Security tightened at Colombo Port
[August 9, 2001 - 10:30 GMT]

The overall security of the Colombo harbour has been placed under a unified command. The Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy is now responsible for the coordination of all security aspects of the harbour.

The authorities have done a comprehensive review of the security measures at the Colombo Harbour.

“Colombo Port has been divided into six different zones and placed under the charge of separate Sector Commands. All functions within the harbour are subjected to the security controls maintained by these sector units”, Chandrananda de Silva, secretary to the Ministry of Defence said at a press conference yesterday.

A threat assessment from land, sea as well as air has been completed and vulnerable areas have been identified both within and outside the harbour.

Additional men have been deployed and the number of watchtowers will be increased to tighten the security in the harbour”.
