Presidential Inquiry into Airport Attack

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga has appointed a Commission of Inquiry into the Tamil Tiger rebel attack on the Air Force Base and the International Airport at Katunayake on July 24.

The members of the Commission are Justice D. Jayawickrama (Chairman), Retired Judge of the Court of Appeal and former Air Force Commander, Air Vice Marshal P.H Mendis. Mr. A.N.R. Amaratunga, Senior Assistant Secretary to the Ministry of Defence has been appointed Secretary to the Commission.

The Commission is due to inquire into all aspects of the attack including the security lapses.

The Commission has been required to submit its recommendations for short and long-term action to prevent such incidents and ensure security of the International Airport and the Air Force Base.

A period of three months has been given for the final submissions of the Commission.
