[August 16, 2001 - 12:20 GMT]

Countries of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation [SAARC] are considering the adoption of a common currency to be used in the region.

“A proposal for an eventual South Asian Economic Union is being considered,” said Nihal Rodrigo, Secretary General of SAARC, addressing the Asia Pacific Enterprise Summit 2001.

The 11th SAARC Summit expected to be held in December this year, is expected to take up this issue.
