A University is to be established in Bandarawela utilising the resources of the faculties of Applied and Agricultural Sciences of the Sabaragamuwa University at Buttala and Rahangala. The recommendation has been made by a committee appointed by Minister of Higher Education and Information Technology Indika Gunawardena, to decide on the location; the faculties and programmes and courses of study to be offered and their relevance to the changing economic conditions; the physical facilities and capital requirements to establish the university; number of students to be admitted to the proposed faculties and study programmes and the academic and administrative requirements. The report by the committee has suggested that the Uva University should be established in phases commencing September 2002. It is proposed to offer 17-degree programmes under the shelter of the three faculties, i.e. Science and Technology, Agricultural Sciences and Vocational Studies and Education.
