Last Friday the Colombo Hilton was bustling with business more than usual as the National Chamber of Exporters (NCE) honoured the best exporters in Sri Lanka. This year, a total of 54 awards and medals were presented to the best export industries in sectors including, agriculture traditional and non-traditional, value added tea, industry, service providers, exporters and gems and jewellery. The NCE has come a long way since its inception. Originally known as the National Exporters Association (NEA), it was started by a handful of exporters in 1986. Their aim; To create a dynamic export sector to help Sri Lanka meet its socio-economic challenges particularly in relation to employment generation and foreign exchange earnings towards achieving economic independence. Under the leadership of Patrick Amerasinghe, its membership increased as it gained the trust of industrialists in the sector. As a result, in 1994 the NCE was established. This year, the awards presented included 19-gold, 18-silver and 17-bronze. In addition, several special trophies were given to the most value added and innovative product, best woman exporter, most outstanding exporters in sectors, best Sri Lankan brand exporter and the most outstanding exporter and runner-up.
