[August 22, 2001 - 11:35 GMT]

Sri Lanka was recently admitted as a new member state of the Hague Conference on Private International Law, the principal body dealing with the codification of Private International Law.

The Hague Conference was established as a permanent intergovernmental organisation 1955, to further its global mission to work towards the progressive unification of the rules of private International Law, as well as of providing international co-operation in civil and commercial matters.

The Hague Conference is one of the main bodies responsible for initiating action concerning the negotiation and conclusion of international conventions dealing with a range of matters in the field of Private International Law such as maintenance, the recognition of marriages and divorces, protection of minors, child abduction, service of judicial process, taking of evidence and enforcement of judgements.

Prior to becoming a member of the Hague Conference, Sri Lanka actively followed the work of the Hague Conference as an observer and has already become a party to the Hague Conventions on protection of children and co-operation in respect of inter-country adoptions, service abroad of judicial and extra-judicial documents in civil and commercial matters and the taking of evidence.
