A sum of Rs. 5 million has been allocated for enhancing youth development activities in the North-East. According to a spokesman of the Youth Affairs Ministry, the decision followed a discussion between the Minister of Youth Affairs, Jeevan Kumaratunge, and the Northeast Governor, Asoka Jayawardena.

The main purpose of the funds is to encourage the creative talents of the youth in these areas. Jaffna, Vavuniya, Killinochchi, Mulativu and Mannar districts will receive half the funds while the remainder will go to the Trincomalee, Ampara and Batticaloa districts.

The money will be utilised for a number of youth development activities that includes providing computer training, library books and sports equipment for the youth in these districts. The youth in the in Jaffna Divisional Secretariat area will be provided with computer training, which will be carried out in collaboration with the UNDP.

In addition to the Youth Affairs Ministry, several other organisations have pledged their support in various ways. The World University of Canada, the UNDP as well as CARE will be providing training and financial assistance. Several non-governmental organisations have also assured their assistance to the project.

G.A. Vavuniya, K. Ganesh, agrees that there is a big need for such training in these areas. He said, “There is definitely a need. But what’s more important is the follow-up action. What we do now is give them training and just send them off. But the employment opportunities and initial capital should also be looked into after the training. It should be closely monitored by the NYSC.”
