Fifteen civilians injured in LTTE mine explosion
[August 23, 2001 - 12:00 GMT]

Fifteen civilians were injured, four of them seriously, when a passenger bus was caught in an LTTE claymore mine explosion at Vellopoint, Nilaveli in Trincomalee,  260 kilometres northeast of the capital Colombo, around noon Wednesday.

Only fifteen persons including the driver and the conductor had been in the bus. Eight were admitted to the Trincomalee hospital and seven with minor injuries were treated at the Nilaveli hospital.

According to defence sources the bomb had exploded just before the bus reached the exact point where the bomb was placed.

The attack came two days after the LTTE overran a police station in the eastern district of Ampara, killing 15 policemen and two civilian employees.

The village of Nilaveli with its well-known Beach Hotel, still offers tourists to Sri Lanka’s east coast, lots of sun ‘n sand.
