The Government on Wednesday appointed a Presidential Task Force under the Chairmanship of the Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayake for the management of the current economic crisis. A government news release said yesterday, “The Task Force would make a rapid assessment of the current economic crisis and identify adversely affected economic activities, propose immediate remedial actions by various stakeholders and appropriate interventions by financial institutions.” Accordingly, the government would identify any bottlenecks that may come in the way during the implementation of proposed strategies and continuously follow up on the implementation of the agreed actions and report progress and problems to the Cabinet of Ministers regularly. “The Task Force should comprise the Secretaries of the Ministries of Finance, Tourism, Industries, Shipping, Civil Aviation, Port Development, Fisheries, Labour, Power and Energy, Plantation Industries and Agriculture,” the release further stated. Representatives of private sector exporters and importers, garment industries, hoteliers and shipping agents will also be invited to serve in this Task Force.
