Major Shipping lines resume operations through Colombo
[August 24, 2001 - 11:00 GMT]

Major shipping lines have resumed operations and more shipping lines are expected to call at the Colombo Port within the next few weeks, with the London underwriters agreeing to cut down the additional War Risk surcharge.

The first mainline vessel from Hanjin Shipping Lines of South Korea and the first vessel of the United Alliance of Germany ‘DSR Senator’ called at the Colombo Port Thursday, Daya Wijesekera, Senior Assistant Secretary of the Ports Authority confirmed.

“A vessel each from the Taiwan based Evergreen Marine and Uniglory lines are expected to call at the Colombo Port on Monday,” Wjesekera added.

The additional war risk surcharge has been reduced by about 75 percent as a result of agreements reached by the Sri Lankan delegation with the Risk Rating committee of Lloyd’s Insurance and of the Lloyd’s Underwriters’ Association of London. The Minister of Ports Development said that it would come down to zero like it was before the attack on the airport.

All necessary measures have been taken to tighten port security and a team of security consultants from London, approved by Lloyds are expected in Sri Lanka to review all aspects of security at the Port of Colombo.
