Other tourist destinations have bigger problems than Sri Lanka. This is the view of Sputnik Asia, one of Russia’s leading tour operators now in Sri Lanka with a group of leading Russian TV crew and travel writers from the NTV network to film a documentary on Sri Lanka. “Like in Chechnya, the war in Sri Lanka was in the north,” Sputnik Asia’s Executive Director Farkhard O. Babakhanov said. Babakhanov a former diplomat attached to the Russian Embassy here, said that most Russians were not too familiar with Sri Lanka. Sputnik Asia’s goal was to promote Sri Lanka’s many attractions. The suspension of Aeroflot flights to Colombo due to economic reasons a few months ago have resulted in certain constraints with passengers being diverted through Zurich, but “we are optimistic that Sri Lanka with its many attractions will be a good travel destination for Russians.”
