UNP - PA talks to conclude tomorrow
[August 27, 2001 - 12:30 GMT]

The second round of PA-UNP talks was held today for a period of four hours.

A joint statement released this evening by Lakshman Kadirgamar and K.N. Choksy stated that the two parties discussed the issues on an “agreed agenda.” It also stated that the talks were due to end tomorrow.

At the beginning of talks on Saturday, the priority issues for the PA were the abolition of the executive presidency and constitutional changes. However, the UNP’s focus was on the re-summoning of parliament, cancellation of the referendum and the establishment of the five independent commissions.

The issues included in the “agreed agenda” are still uncertain. However, with talks scheduled to end tomorrow, the two major political parties are expected to make known their resolve, on the crucial issues facing the country.
