[August 29, 2001 - 11:30 GMT]

An International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) team which was in Sri Lanka recently, found that current Annex 17 Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPS) at the Bandaranaike International Airport were at a satisfactory level overall.

At the invitation of the Sri Lankan Government, the ICAO mobilised a four-member team of security specialists under a special assistance program to asses the aviation security posture in Sri Lanka.

The ICAO team was primarily concerned with ascertaining the degree of Sri Lanka’s compliance with Standards And Recommended Practices on Aviation Security contained in Annex 17 of the Convention on International Civil Aviation.

The team evaluated in detail the preventive security measures that are in place at the Bandaranaike International Airport, to counter any acts of unlawful interference with international civil aviation.
