The Government of Japan has provided a grant of Japanese Yen 600 million (approximately Rs. 447 million) to increase of Sri Lanka’s food production. The grant is provided under the Japanese Government Food production Programme, which is extended annually to support programmes to increase food production in developing countries. A Finance Ministry source said, “The proceeds of this year’s grant will be used to purchase products such as fertilizer, agricultural machinery and equipment, which will help to increase the productivity of staple crops.” The Japanese Government has been providing assistance under this scheme to Sri Lanka since 1977 and the total assistance received so far is Rupees 33 billion. This is the largest grant extended by a donor on an annual basis for the provision of support services to develop the agriculture sector in Sri Lanka. This money will also be utilised to finance agriculture related projects, which contribute to the enhancement of economic and social development in Sri Lanka.
