Referendum cancelled: Parliament re-summoned a day earlier

President Chandrika Kumaratunga last night officially cancelled the Referendum fixed for October 18, 2001. It was earlier postponed from August 21, 2001.

In another development, Parliament has been re-summoned for a meeting at 10.00 A.M. on September 6, 2001, a day earlier than previously scheduled.

The two announcements were made in Gazette Notifications issued at midnight Sunday.
