[September 3, 2001 - 12:30 GMT]

“I invite all fellow party members to unite for the sake of the country at this critical juncture, irrespective of petty personal issues,” said Leader of the SLFP, President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga addressing the party's Golden Jubilee Celebrations at the Henry Pedris Stadium in Havelock Town, Colombo, Sunday.

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party established in 1951 is the major partner in the ruling People's Alliance. The Party, which was launched with S W R D Bandaranaike as its first leader, set out on a mission to usher in freedom for the Sinhala majority after gaining independence from colonial rule, and create a framework of equal opportunity for everybody.

President Kumaratunga exhorted the entire nation to join her in destroying terrorism and ushering in a lasting peace.

She confirmed that the government had held fruitful talks with the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) on Friday and was confident of overcoming the current political crisis soon.
