All agricultural loans up to Rs. 20,000 lent to drought stricken farmers are to be written off and the recovery of all other loans to farmers temporarily suspended on the orders of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga. The decision followed the President’s discussions with MPs and Provincial Government Officials. It is also one of the provisions in the Memorandum of Understanding signed Wednesday between the PA and the JVP. Government has also decided to provide farmers with a range of concessions including longer grace periods and low interest rates.
