Parliament reopens; Bill passed unanimously
[September 7, 2001 - 12:20 GMT]

Parliament reconvened at 10:00 am Thursday, after a near two-month prorogation and unanimously passed the Marriage Amendment Act.

Under the new amendment the Christian clergy would be empowered to issue official certificates after the solemnisation of marriages in their churches.

Hitherto, the records of the solemnisation had to be forwarded to the state authorities by the Church, for the certificate to be issued by them.

R. Yogarajan of the Ceylon Worker’s Congress (CWC) was sworn in as a Member of Parliament before Speaker Anura Bandaranaike, in place of the vacancy created by the resignation of K. Marimuttu.

Days after the prorogation of Parliament, opposition parties held street demonstrations against the prorogation of Parliament and called for its reopening.

Parliament was reopened a day earlier than scheduled following an agreement between the ruling People’s Alliance (PA) and the opposition People’s Liberation Front (JVP).
