Saudi Fund for Development has approved a sum of Rs.1.2 billion (US$ 10 billion) for the proposed Neuro Trauma Centre, at Colombo’s National Hospital. A special team from the Saudi organisation was in Sri Lanka in July to inspect the location and to ascertain the need for such a facility in the island. There has been an increase in the number of patients who seek urgent Neuro surgical treatment here in Sri Lanka, particularly victims of road accidents, civil violence and ongoing civil war. Most of these patients are rushed to the National Hospital, where facilities are extremely inadequate to save the lives. Even the private sector hospitals do not have facilities for the treatment of spinal, head and brain injuries. The Government is planning to construct a four-storied fully equipped neuro surgical unit, when the funds are in place.
