Commonwealth will unite to disarm terrorism
[September 12, 2001 - 12:15 GMT]

“The sympathies and grief of people all around the Commonwealth of Nations are certainly with President Bush and the American people at this time,” Donald McKinnon Commonwealth Secretary General said in Colombo Wednesday.

The Commonwealth Secretary General is on a two-day visit to Sri Lanka.

“I am speaking here in Sri Lanka amongst the President and people of this country who have known probably far too much terrorism. It was only six weeks ago……we are reminded of the attack at the Airport….a very poignant reminder of just how uncalculated these acts of terrorism can be,” he said.

“We in the Commonwealth have always condemned and deplored and opposed terrorism and will continue to do so. When Commonwealth leaders meet in Brisbane in 3-weeks’ time - I am sure they will repeat that condemnation, that opposition; that determination to do something about it,” McKinnon added.

“Once again, the Peoples of the Commonwealth will hopefully unite…free people everywhere…. to oppose; to seek out and totally disarm, those who would inflict this sort of terrorism on innocent people, wherever they are.”
