The International Civil Aviation Organization has submitted an action plan to the Sri Lankan Government and Aviation Authorities aimed at assisting the swift implementation of airport security measures. The ICAO has noted with favour, the creation of a new national program on aviation security, a revised emergency response plan for a terrorist attack and an updated plan for airport security. ICAO team arrived in Sri Lanka following the terrorist attack on the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake by LTTE on July 24. The team has also made observations on many on-going upgrades on operational security measures at the airport and noted that in certain areas such measures exceed minimum standards, while certain vulnerabilities that require strengthening have also been identified. They have also emphasized the need for a structured methodology for the optimum enhancement of aviation security.
